The Workouts You Avoid Are the Ones You Need Most

Think about the workout you always skip. Now ask yourself, are you avoiding it because it doesn’t work, or because it challenges you? Eeeek!

The Temple Mindset

If that doesn't put you into motion then maybe we try another way—The Temple Mindset. Let's start with 1 Corinthians 6:19, "Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit?" This passage reminds us that our bodies are not our own - they are given to us by God to steward well. If our bodies are temples, we shouldn’t just train them in ways that feel easy or convenient—we should challenge them to be strong and capable.

Why We Cherry-Pick Workouts

We all have that one exercise we avoid, whether it’s burpees, heavy squats, or long runs. They are the elements that we're uncomfortable with, they expose our weaknesses, or require more effort. But, avoiding them won’t make them disappear. It is like neglecting part of our temple. Would you only clean or repair the easiest section of a house while ignoring a crack in the foundation?

Growth Comes from Discomfort

Just like faith grows through trials, strength grows by embracing what's difficult. Most people like to say "No" to cardio! But, cardio has its purpose for the temple. Making your heart pump (a little extra) is it's way of building strength. Who doesn't want a strong ticker?! God calls us to take care of what He has created. Which is ourselves and it includes our health and physical strength.

Practical Ways to Stop Cherry-Picking

  • Identify Your Weaknesses – Write down what workouts or movements you tend to avoid.
  • Reframe Your Mindset – View difficult workouts as an opportunity to strengthen your temple.
  • Commit to Balance – Create a plan that includes those exercises, even in small doses.
  • Seek Accountability – Have a coach or workout partner keep you on track.

Final Thoughts:
If your body is a gift from God, how are you honoring it? Don’t just train what feels good—train for what makes you stronger. This week, challenge yourself to do the workout you’ve been dodging.
