The Power of Boring: Wellness Hack

The Best Wellness Hack No One Talks About

Be boring.

  • Wake up with the same old gratitude statement.
  • Eat the same breakfast everyday.
  • Choose the same route for your daily walk.
  • Make tacos every Tuesday.
  • Always have a water bottle near by.
  • Read your favorite Bible verse/motivational quote.
  • Fluff your pillow the same way before bed.

The list goes on! And I'm sure you are mentally making your own checklist of things that you do on repeat that may seem boring. But, these "boring" tasks are what's keeping you consistent and disciplined.

The goal is to tweak the habits you are already doing to align with healthy choices.

Examples:

You dread the alarm clock and grumble/stumble out of bed.
Tomorrow, with every "snooze," recite what you are thankful for. God gave you another day- be blessed and live it!

Your morning is crazy busy, you're just hoping that you remembered to wear pants as you walk out the door and you are starving come mid-morning.
Tomorrow, wake up 10 minutes earlier and make a simple breakfast. Plan it out the night before for better adherence.

You are a fast food bandit because of the age old question, "What's For Dinner?"
Tomorrow, make tacos! And make them a staple each week. Meal Planning is a form of meal prepping. Level yourself up by fixing the taco meat ahead of time or an easy re-heat.

You like to end a long day with a casual social media scroll and are finally ready to call it quits when your eyeballs are dried out.
Tomorrow, ask yourself - "what am I gaining by scrolling?" And explore other ways to relax or wind-down after a chaotic day. There are several options out there that are far more beneficial to aiding in a quality night's rest. Fluff your pillow to signal your brain that it's bed time, read a daily devotional, journal your emotions from the day, or share your day with family.

What makes "boring" effective?

It reduces decision fatigue by making your daily habits simple and predictable. No guess work - this is what you are doing! Boring equals consistency. We've heard that term a time or two and when it comes to our bodies, they operate like a machine. If you consistently oil it, then the better chance of it not breaking down. The hype of "new" can wear off easily but, boring allows for mastering the basics through lots of repetition!

Most people will get overwhelmed with "getting healthy" by reaching for motivation, fancy routines, or the latest health trends. The truth? People who master the boring are the ones who see sustained success! Disclaimer - it will not give you a hall pass for hard times and valleys. But, it will help you keep the bigger picture in mind and give you a wider foundation to roll around on.

What’s one “boring” habit you swear by?
